DNS Whitelist – Protect against false positives

dnswl.org — improving the reliability of e-mail worldwide since 2006

What is dnswl.org?

Dnswl.org is the leading whitelist provider for email filtering. It is being used by over 50'000 organisations worldwide, and contains more than 100'000 entries of "good mailservers". Your email filter should try to avoid tagging messages as spam, if they come from one of those good mailservers.

Dnswl.org assigns all "good mailservers" into one of four trust levels: none, low, medium and high trust. Higher trust levels are the result of how a mailserver and the network are operated, how spam coming from these sources is contained and similar factors. Trust is gained over time.

Spam from a dnswl.org-listed IP?

If you detect spam coming from a dnswl.org-listed IP, you should first use the regular abuse contact (eg the ISP or other organisation responsible for the spam or spam-related resources like spamvertized websites etc). If no action is taken by the responsible (or no action is to be expected), please let us know. It is also OK to Cc: us on your complaints to the ISP.

Please use admins@dnswl.org for such correspondence. If you want to regularly contribute, you can register as an abuse reporter.

What does it cost?

Access for non-commercial use is free through the public nameservers.

Users with more than 100'000 queries per day on the public nameservers must purchase a subscription for rsync download. The same applies to companies selling anti-spam services. See the license for details.

dnswl.org is a volunteer-driven and collaborative project. We appreciate all the support we get from numerous ISPs and organisations around the world.. If you would like to support the project with your own whitelisting data or with ressources, or if you want to be active as an editor of dnswl.org data, please contact us at admins@dnswl.org.

Recommended Usage

You may use dnswl.org data to filter however you like, but our general recommendations are:

Skip greylisting for all listed IPs (none - high) All listed hosts are expected to pass greylisting so you are only avoiding delays, not affecting what gets blocked.
Skip blacklisting for all listed IPs (none - high) All listed hosts are known to send legitimate email and should not be blacklisted.
Skip spam filtering for medium and high ranked IPs. These are trusted to send spam rarely enough that they are not worth filtering.
Never skip virus filtering.

Caveat: Greylisting some freemail providers may increase the chance that bulk detectors (Razor/Pyzor/DCC etc) catch some additional spam.

The following trust levels are present in dnswl.org data:

Trust LevelDescription
HighNever sends spam.
MediumExtremely rare spam occurrences, corrected promptly.
LowOccasional spam occurrences, actively corrected but less promptly.
This is the default for most categories.
NoneLegitimate mail server, may also send spam.
This is the default for some categories (eg Email Marketing Provider).
